WORLD UNDER 21 FINAL

16 year old Englishman Riley Payne of the Milton Keynes Cats may have needed a little bit of luck but took full advantage of everything to be crowned as the World Under 21 Champion with a stunning display.  He met the two pre-meeting favourites in his first rides and was helped by bike problems for Teodor Patocka as he won heat 3, Patocka having just returned from injury and looking a little rusty, and then lost to Michel Heyvaert in heat 7.  Payne then went unbeaten for the rest of the meeting with a retirement for Heyvaert in heat 13 meaning he claimed the title despite Heyvaert looking like the faster rider on show in his other races.  Heyvaert and Patocka still did enough to take 2nd and 3rd respectively with the points they gained from the races they completed.  Payne was obviously over the moon to lift the trophy and deserved his win after showing his nerve to win a crucial heat 20 but there were grimmaces from the others on the rostrum as they were left to reflect on what might have been in what was their last year of eligibility at the junior level.

Ryan Roy, aged 19 so eligible for next season, and Abay Khan also recorded double figures in good displays.  From the rest only Tyrone York (17) and Jay Patterson (16) will be able to compete in the Under 21 competition again and they finished 6th and 13th respectively.  For everyone else it was their last chance of Under 21 glory but riders like Michael France, Hal Eaton and Jaan Kaljuste all showed clear signs they could well be names to watch at senior level in the coming years.  Alexander Bengtsson of Sweden was fancied to do well but after a win in heat 1 couldn't find any consistency and finished disappointingly well down the field.
